Natural Centerpieces

Trends come and go in the floral industry, but some basic principles stay the same. One of those principles is to have an appreciation for nature and the colorful and fragrant beauty that it produces. With the arrival of spring right around the corner, there’ll be an abundance of organic materials that can be combined to make the ideal natural centerpiece. It’s important to keep the outdoors in mind when selecting everything you intend to use, from the flowers, foliage, and container.

Let’s start from the bottom-up. When you’re brainstorming your design, start by contemplating what you would like to achieve. The type and size of container you choose will help determine how the rest of the piece will be structured. For obvious reasons, a variety wooden containers are the most commonly used for natural arrangements, but don’t be discouraged to use a metal, glass, or ceramic vase. Rustic and galvanized metal containers are quality choices for a natural arrangement. Now that you have your vase picked out, it’s time to build your design.

Natural floral arrangements are designed look as if the flowers were freshly picked from the fields. Most natural centerpieces include flowers that are considered garden flowers such as roses and tulips or wild flowers like daisies, asters, and feverfew. Although the flower selection can be important, there’s no set structure for a natural arrangement. It can be any shape or size that you’d like. Start with wet floral foam to hold and hydrate your flowers then start inserting the flowers to create your scenery. Try not to overcrowd it with flowers because these types of designs call for a larger amount of greenery and fillers than everyday arrangements.

The essence of natural centerpieces is to keep it as wild and organic as possible. Which means your design will need it’s fair share of greenery such as boxwood and eucalyptus. Wild flowers like wax flower and queen Anne’s lace would fit right in with your theme and is a appropriate substitute for gypsophilia (baby’s breath). You can incorporate more wood into your arrangement with the addition of curly willow or tree bark. If you have any open area around the base of your flowers add sheet or reindeer moss to simulate the wild. Stones and bark would be a nice touch as well.

Just like in the wild, the different elements in your design are what makes it whole. Bring the scenery that we so much overlook to the spotlight with a wonderful natural centerpiece. Not only are these arrangements adaptable to any season of the year, but they combine all of the finest aspects of wild right in your living room.

  1. I love making unique center pieces. There are so many different options of flowers (real, silk, wooden, etc.) and so many different options for a foundation (vases of various materials, boxes, bowls, etc.) with filler of all kinds (wood chips, grasses, stones, etc.). The materials that you use, the size, colors and such will all depend on what you are making the center piece for. Whether it is for your table at home or perhaps a wedding or other event. Great tips, thanks for sharing!
